The beginning of any journey is both exciting and scary. Every summer my family and I travel back to Michigan to spend most of our summer with family and friends. The days leading up to the journey are exciting because we can't wait to get back home and see the people we don't get to see very often. We plan the things we'll do as a family like go to the zoo or visit Frankenmuth. Even the dogs get excited about going back to the big backyard with soft dirt and grass.
The start of the journey is scary, too. As our van pulls away from the house I think about what I've forgotten to do in the house in Virgina. I think about what things I may have forgotten to take with me. I worry about the weather and traffic as we drive. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming.
Our journey to become a disciple of God is much the same way. When we first encounter Jesus we are very excited. He's so loving and accepting that we want to do everything we can to get close to him. Then the journey starts and the worrying begins. What if God can't forgive me? Isn't there something I can do to earn my salvation? What am I forgetting to do?
As we start this journey to confirm your faith and prepare you to be members of the church, it is my hope that some of your worries will be calmed. Taking the time to reflect on your learning and any questions that may arise will help keep worries at bay. Writing about what is on our minds is a great way to see what is bothering us. When we see our ideas in print sometimes what was bothering us doesn't look so intimidating.
So, lets begin. Take some time before each lesson to see what we'll be learning about, the new terms to help us get a better handle on the subject and the assignments that you'll be doing. Everything is posted to the website ahead of time. I'm looking forward to starting this journey with you. Let's get started.
